During the original Art Deco era, the 1920s and 30s, African safaris and big game hunting were popular. As a result, you will often find big game skins adorning original Art Deco interiors.
Back then it would have likely been real big game skins from zebra's, lions, tigers and so on. Today, nobody in their right mind would want a rug made out of a rare animal. Instead, there are synthetic and domesticated livestock alternatives - cowhides, sheepskin, etc.
Both alternatives allow you to enjoy a beautiful exotic big game pattern as the focal point of your room.

It's worth noting that wool has a lot of great properties that make it a bit of a super material for rugs. It regulates moisture and temperature, it's hypoallergenic and is inhospitable to dust mites. It also resists mildew, fungus and static electricity and is a natural fire retardant.
There you go, I bet you never knew wool was so great!
